Artist Statement

I am interested in creating images with mystery and depth which illustrate the intricacy of our natural world. My pieces explore nature’s systems and the creatures which live within those systems.
I paint in casein on board. Casein is a milk based water soluble paint which has a chalky look and brilliant color. Because of its’ translucent qualities I can start with thick random patterns of paint, allow that to dry, then coat those with thin fields of color. The result is an incredibly rich and textured surface that still reveals the colors below. From there I push, scratch, and pull until I have a piece I hope captivates the observer to the extent which the subject engrosses me.

Bio

I graduated with a B.F.A. in studio arts, a double major of painting and ceramics, in 1986 from the University of Iowa. After working in many capacities for several years I moved west to Montana to open my own studio. I opened “Cottage Industries” in 1997(later to become “The Flat Space”) and worked as a self employed “retail” artist for nine years. During those years my artistic motivation revolved around making a living off a retail space in a small mountain tourist town. I created paintings, printed cards from my crayon drawings which I sold around the world in boutiques, and made other art objects that appealed to a broad population.

After nearly a decade, in the spring of 2006, I made the leap to creating art from my soul rather than for sale hoping that the integrity of the work would propel me into a new level of artistic achievement. My current work reflects that effort. I paint with thick, rich textures and bright colors which echo the love I have for my subjects. My life in Montana embodies my love for the nature, the wild, animals, insects, plants and the world of the natural sciences and that is what I paint.

I live with my husband, Rainer Krapf, 2 dogs: Dingo and Mugzie, 4 cats: Chuck, Dave, Zeus, and Oliver, 3 cockatiels: Jubjub, Grizzabella, and Scimbleshanks, 6 goldfish and 1 semi-aquatic turtle named Mac.

All of my pets have been rescued from shelters.
